There was a long slow drive east into the low winter morning sun, glimpses of frost along the dam road and valleys there and back socked in by fog, views of overhead air laden with smoke and pollutants trapped by high pressure and chilled by temperatures barely in the low fifties.

A cropped shot of desiccated but still green leaves hanging off branches in a tree in a drugstore parking lot Sunday, December 18, 2022 in San Pablo, California

Another karaoke evening, the year’s last, and good company saw several abrupt final shifts, earnest sonic tributes and valiant nods to upcoming holidays and most favored anthems. I warmed up with Beach House and Corinne Bailey Rae, and followed with Radiohead and Peter Schilling.

A tapestry hanging on a white wall, black in color with multicolored letters sewn on it that say KINDNESS IS VITAL. Next to the tapestry, built into the wall, is a small wooden bookshelf with books on it. The room this is in has a black and soft gold checkerboard pattern. In the next room, a broad stretch of wall completely covered with 12-inch vinyl records is visible. It's Saturday, December 17, 2022 at Stay Gold Deli on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland, California.

An actual, honest to goodness spa day, where I learned a lot about what my teeth (and a few TMJ doohickeys) have been grinding away at right under my nose, as well as what my neck and shoulders have been getting up to behind my back in recent years. Amazing teamwork there, body!

Mostly empty westbound Mount Diablo Boulevard lanes heading toward Highway 24 on-ramp Friday, December 16, 2022 in Walnut Creek, California. Red light signals glow in the distance just before the ramp.

I wrote a story after an afternoon presser in Oakland, saying hi to an ex-coworker and a current one. On the interstate back home, I noped out of what looked like a slowdown near the Maze. Instead, I put on the new SZA and took San Pablo Avenue, noticing this tree at a stoplight.

A tree with a barren gray brown trunk completely wrapped with tiny Christmas style lights, rising up to an unwrapped green leafed tuft atop it, against deep blue eastern facing cloudless twilit sky outside a fast casual Mexican restaurant Thursday, December 15, 2022 in the 12000 block of San Pablo Avenue in Richmond, California

I like layering, dressing for the weather when it’s cold, wet or both. Today I’m thinking about dressing for (not in) the dark. Blame early sunsets, purposefully limited public opportunities or the ways that most-favored black or gray clothes hang in closets or hunker in drawers.

A rushed, slightly out of focus selfie of an African American man wearing a white N95 respirator mask, a black knit Oaklandish brand watchman's cap, an extra large black Levi's trucker jacket, and a generic black scarf. I'm walking through a darkened, empty courtyard after leaving an office building about an hour after sunset Wednesday, December 14, 2022 in Walnut Creek, California.

Several different kinds of day today! A contact lens day so I could see my face right, since my glasses sit slightly differently than they used to. Also a pile of birds day, after watching their sunset laps around a senior center roof, and a wishing for but not getting candy day.

Against soft pale golden partly cloudy sky, silhouettes of a dozen birds perched on the corner of a senior center's tile roof Tuesday, December 13, 2022 in San Pablo, California

A day, emptier than expected with no exercise but a fair amount of spinning my wheels and eventually some work accomplished. Lemon cake gifted from a pal leavened what was bitter, from morning coffee to minor evening irritations, and there was even a bit of blue sky before dark.

A long horizontal cloud bank list salmon pink by early evening sunshine on its western edge and shadowed grayish black on its opposite in a clear blue sky Monday, December 12, 2022 in San Pablo, California

I spent an hour at a cafe that another app I use seems to think I last visited ten and a half years ago. I got eyed by a couple of customers who thought I might be up to something. Other than that, I got good counter service and okay coffee, but also left alone. Next week? Maybe.

A large white city of Oakland sewer division van sits parked, unoccupied and surrounded by six or seven orange traffic cones Sunday, December 11, 2022 outside a house on Maple Avenue in Oakland, California's upper Dimond District.

The heaviest of today’s wet weather came through this morning, unfortunately for a driver whose car spun out in westbound lanes near the bottom of a long hill, but fortunately for the rest of us who slowed down and gave each other space as we passed. Hopefully, others kept it up.

Through my car windshield, a dark colored Lexus sedan faces oncoming westbound Highway 24 traffic after spinning out, sustaining minor to moderate damage and coming to rest in the roadway's slow or right hand lane near the bottom of a sloping hill east of El Nido Ranch Road just before 9:55 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2022 in Lafayette, California during rainy weather conditions that forced other approaching drivers to move slowly and deliberately while rubber necking and looky lou-ing as they passed by. Just beyond the Lexus, a large Falck ambulance van with its back doors open and flashing lights off is barely visible and parked in the slow lane, with a paramedic ready to attend to at least one person, if not the driver.

A restful day off, with a really nice long bike ride, more time listening to somebody’s conveniently assembled list of the year’s best songs, some guitar time and some more South Asian takeaway. Tomorrow I’ll try to progress on a book, do more listening and exercise and stay dry.

A sunset view of a mass of high clouds lit fluorescent salmon orange at their edges by far off sunset light angling up onto their western facing edges as seen from my balcony Friday, December 9, 2022 just before 5 p.m.
