I walked uphill through our building’s parking lot, and briefly held my breath when some too-quiet car’s headlights briefly and unsettlingly illuminated my back before turning away. I said hi to A. at our gate, then crossed the avenue for snacks to white-flag a weeklong craving.

A stripped down motorcycle leans on its kickstand and takes up surprisingly little space between the white lines of an oil patch stained parking space Friday, January 27, 2023 at an apartment complex in San Pablo, California.

Weeks like this one remind me anew how people see (or don’t) other communities, organizations and outlets. Shout-out to [redacteds] for giving me the business as I asked questions, or tried to listen. In time, I’ll feel more grateful; honesty’ll feel like less of a gaffe than a gift.

A metal roll down door covering a small drive in garage at a home Wednesday, January 25, 2023 in the 700 block of Jackson Street in Oakland, California. The door is painted red with faint yellow accents, and a big blue flower with green leaves around it is centered on the door.

Sitting in sunshine, nearly 60F/16C out on the plaza. Just eaten. Should I work outside today? Maybe, if I could tune out a person sitting nearby, trying to give someone on the other end of a phone call a little bit more depth on what they do before their 11:30 Saturday appointment.

A recyclable plastic clamshell tray holds a bunless double cheeseburger with bacon, and a side salad with tomatoes and onions and balsamic dressing. Next to it, a lemonade flavored Vitamin Water bottle and a couple of packets of Doritos sir on a round light gray circular table top outside a catering or bistro restaurant at California Plaza in the 2100 block of North California Boulevard in Walnut Creek, California on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

I forget what it’s like to have a commute, to be alone in my car driving home through several cities. Not so long ago, I lived just over a mile from the newsroom and could bike there, or back to my place if I needed to get my car (not to mention everything else that’s different now).

An African American man wearing a dark colored backward baseball cap, gray long sleeved hooded sweatshirt, medium wash blue jeans with light at the knees sits Tuesday, January 24, 2023 on a painted red step in afternoon sunshine with a white frame mountain bike with yellow tires on the sidewalk in front of him in the 3600 block of San Pablo Avenue in Emeryville, California.

Today started well: seventy pages of a library book and a little solid language app distraction. A bit of torpor got between me and obvious exercise, but remedies remain available the next couple of days. Between bad stretches at work, I kept getting up to go look at the new moon.

A look at the two-day-old new crescent moon in a clear and cloudless western sky around sunset with tiny little Venus not far away, down and to the right, hanging there above the edge of a building's roof Monday, January 23, 2023 in San Pablo, California.

Other than last night’s time out singing and listening to others, I’ve been spending slightly more time at home. Now that’ll change, and it’s just the way the week swings within my calendar and schedule. Midweek will be busy but, more importantly, it’ll work if plans come through.

Today’s views were better than they’ve been in several weeks. I kept noticing things off to the side, just beyond wherever I was: multiple raptor birds flying over San Pablo Dam Road east of El Sobrante; a bicyclist rolling to a stop to use his phone; a sunset San Francisco skyline.

A view from the second lane of westbound Highway 24 in Oakland, California of the Rockridge BART station and the distant San Francisco skyline just after sunset on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

I broke part of a screen for a kitchen light fixture, but wiggling the bulbs inside brought them back to life from a half flickering state yesterday. Then I calendared an appointment for next week, spoke with the maternal unit, and got back on the bike without bursting into flames.

A man sits Thursday, January 19, 2023 by the top of the eastbound interstate 80 offramp to San Pablo Dam Road in San Pablo, California. Close by, a one way traffic sign appears to point to him. In the distance, a larger sign advertises for the Lytton Casino about a half mile west along the road.

Drove into work for the second time this week and ran a couple of errands on the way back, including topping off our car’s tank. Across the street, I saw the welcome sign that lets folks know they’re entering my city leaning against a fence looked like it got sheared off its base.

A green sign reading 'Welcome to San Pablo' atop a tall slim metal pole leans against a black metal spike topped fence Thursday, January 19, 2023 on Rollingwood Drive just north of El Portal Drive in San Pablo, California.

Another of those days that starts with too much breeze, not enough sun, a deficit of hot coffee and a surfeit of events in the path of getting things done. But somehow the papers keep escaping from the printing presses, slipping into plastic bags and landing on, or near, doorsteps.

A daily copy of the East Bay Times newspaper, seen hiding inside a bright green plastic bag to protect it from rain, suns itself atop a set of staircase steps Wednesday, January 18, 2023 just off Pringle Street in Walnut Creek, California.
